Limetree Festival

Sadly due to licensing issues this festival has been cancelled.

Yorkshire’s funky family friendly Limetree Festival runs over 3 days and features music and arts set amongst the beautiful surroundings of Lime Tree Farm nature reserve at Grewelthorpe near Ripon.  The site based in a natural conservation area at the historic location of a Roman encampment at Camp Hill, and offers clear stunning views across the Vale of York, moorland and rivers Ure and Swale.

Limetree is a back to basics return to how festivals used to be when good music was at the heart of a festival and before they became spoiled by big corporate takeovers.  This year the festival will be able to welcome more festival goers than ever before to enjoy a line up of the best local, national and global jazz, soul, funk, dubstep and folk artists, bands and DJs.  Now in its 5th year, the Limetree Festival site welcomes 2000 people to enjoy the vibrant yet relaxed and sociable atmosphere over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

In 2011, despite the appalling weather, Limetree was a great success.  Our competition winners, the Hogan family, gave us the lowdown.  The silver lining was experienced by the tented stages, where audience numbers were higher and, what many people realised is that Limetree Festival is all about the quality of music whether the artist is known or not.

Now onto Limetree 2012! The organisers are taking forward the buzz and excitement from 2011 into planning for 2012, as well as some lessons learnt. For instance, Family Camping will be in a different area in 2012!

The Line Up:

Embracing music and culture with four individual stages, each with their own agenda, the festival is diverse but all inclusive.  The 2012 line-up is yet to be announced.

Highlights for families:

It’s not all about the music at Limetree, although it plays a very major part: the festival takes places at Lime Tree Farm, a spiritual sanctuary at the edge of the Vale of York, complete with roundhouse and stone circle.  For the first time this year there will an astronomy area offering workshops for children and the chance to remember what the night sky looks like away from the glare of city lights using telescopes and interactive workshops.

Limetree is a family run festival and it has always been important to organisers Sean and Karen Birdsall, and their family, that children have as much to do and enjoy as the adults.  A separate camping area this year allows families to relax when it comes to bedtime knowing they won’t be woken by late night stragglers and there is a growing programme of events and workshops for toddlers and teenagers.

Sean comments: “We want everyone to enjoy all that Limetree Festival can offer.  The area in itself is a treat to be in with stunning views across the hills and we even have our own fresh water spring but the site is still relatively small so it feels, and is, safe and easy for everyone to get from place to place. All that and with music covering so many genres there really is something for everyone.”

In the Kreative Kidz Field

The Stars Watching with our very own on site observatory!  Themed on the planets, this area will contain practical play experiments and demonstrations for both the kids and their parents to get involved in throughout each day. There will also be an after-dark telescope session this will bring the solar system to life aided by projected images and music (of course!)

Igo Eco Arts – Barefoot in a Bell Tent

Lisa Igo isn’t your typical storyteller. She also sells Barefoot Books out of her bell tent at festivals all around the UK. Families can enjoy an engaging, fun, and relaxing storytelling and craft session – a haven in the midst of a crowded, noisy festival.  The qualified primary school teacher pairs the storytelling sessions with art workshops, including making animal finger puppets, pirate hats, prince/ss crowns, and swords with the children, out of recycled materials.

Face painting & Hair Braiding

Musical workshops ranging from voice to harp, Guitar taken by the Legendary Jon Gomm.  DJ Workshops with Jim Reiss.  Harp workshops with Sarah Dean.
